What is a dyslexia screener

Not a quiz. A real clinical tool.

The WIAT-4 Dyslexia Index is a standardized assessment published by Pearson — the same tool used by licensed psychologists and school psychologists across the country. It measures the specific reading and phonological processing skills that are affected by dyslexia.

It is not a checklist. It is not a self-report survey. It is a structured, administered assessment that produces a numerical score — and that score tells us whether your child is at risk for dyslexia.

What it tests: phonemic proficiency and word reading. These two subtests produce a composite Dyslexia Index score on a standard scale where 100 is average. The score tells us the level of risk and whether a full evaluation is warranted.

The screening happens over Zoom. Your child sits with our team on a video call and completes the tasks. Nothing to study, nothing to prepare. Just show up with a device and a quiet spot. When the screening is done, our team stays on the call and walks you through the results right away. No waiting. No wondering.

What the WIAT-4 Dyslexia Index measures
Phonemic Proficiency

Your child's ability to hear and work with the individual sounds in spoken language. For example: "Say toothbrush. Now say toothbrush but don't say brush." A foundational skill for reading and one of the earliest indicators of dyslexia risk.

Word Reading

Your child reads letters, letter sounds, and progressively harder words aloud. Starts with common high-frequency words and builds to longer, more complex words. The most direct measure of reading skill relative to age.

Pseudoword Decoding

Your child reads made-up nonsense words aloud — words like "blurst" or "tarvish" — that get progressively harder. Because these words can't be memorized, this test isolates pure decoding ability from reading experience.

Orthographic Fluency

Your child reads a list of real irregular words as quickly as possible in a timed trial. This measures their sight vocabulary — how automatically they recognize the visual patterns of written words.

Together they produce a Dyslexia Index score

Scored on a standard scale where 100 is average. Most children score between 85 and 115. Scores below that range indicate elevated or moderate risk and tell you whether a full evaluation is warranted.

How It Works

What You Get

You leave with answers, not just a score.

Dyslexia Index Score

A standardized composite score from the WIAT-4, showing where your child falls relative to their age and grade peers.

Risk Level

Low, moderate, or high risk for dyslexia — clearly stated in plain language, not buried in clinical jargon.

Clear Recommendation

We tell you exactly what the results mean and what we recommend as the next step — whether that is monitoring, a full evaluation, or specialist referral.

Same-Call Results Conversation

When the screening ends, our team stays on the Zoom call and walks you through the findings right away. No scheduling a separate call. No waiting.

Next Steps

If a full evaluation is recommended, we explain exactly what that involves, what it costs, and how to move forward. No pressure, no runaround.

Specialist Connections

When the results point toward specific support needs, we connect you with the right local specialists: OT, speech therapy, tutors, and more.

Who Reviews Your Results

A real licensed practitioner. Not a computer.

Our team is with you on the Zoom call for the entire screening. When it wraps, they stay on and walk you through the results right then. No sending results off to be reviewed later. No waiting days for someone to email you a risk level.

This is not an automated scoring system. It is not a teacher filling out a checklist. It is a live, structured assessment administered by our team, who can answer your questions the moment the screening ends.

Your results mean something. Because the person reviewing them knows what they are looking at.
